Leadership Greater Hartford's award-winning Leaders on Board program has successfully matched more than 300 individuals with more than 75 nonprofit organizations. CRIS Radio, a 35-year-old nonprofit that provides audio access for people who are blind or print-challenged, including those with learning, physical, intellectual or emotional disabilities, is just one of many nonprofit partners whose Board has benefited from the Leaders on Board program.
Dianne Dunne, Executive Director of CRIS Radio, explains: "Several of CRIS Radio's board members have participated in programs offered by Leadership Greater Hartford, and during the past three years, CRIS has recruited four new board members through the organization's Leaders On Board Express Match program. These new board members offer CRIS wide-ranging diversity in terms of professional and community experience, age, and ethnicity. Leaders On Board offers CRIS an excellent opportunity to recruit new board members who bring varied voices to the organization's governance." Leaders on Board is a program created by Leadership Greater Hartford with support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and in collaboration with the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. The program began in 2009 and strengthens nonprofit organizations by training and connecting participants with boards of directors seeking new members. It attracts individuals who want to serve on a board, develop their leadership skills and serve the community. The program also attracts nonprofit organizations who are looking for board members who have been trained in the basics of board membership. In addition, corporations and businesses participate in the program by offering board governance training to prepare their employees who are interested in serving the community.
