Walgreens Distribution Center Wins Award for Energy Efficiency

Windsor-based Walgreens Distribution Center was recently recognized by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for its commitment to reducing its energy consumption and air pollution during summer 2012. The distribution center was one of eleven organizations statewide to receive a “Summer Saver” award. Walgreens Distribution Center received a Summer Saver Peak Performer Award for the highest achievement in reducing electricity demand as part of the ISO-New England Load Response program administered by Connecticut Light & Power. From May through September 2012, the distribution center voluntarily curtailed 1.77 megawatts of load, or 40 percent, without the use of backup diesel generation. “The businesses and organizations we honor today made a commitment to reduce their energy use and by doing so have become models for others to follow,” said DEEP Commissioner Daniel C. Esty at a ceremony at the State Capitol on April 23. “The combined efforts of the eleven Summer Savers Award winners resulted in energy savings in kilowatt hours, peak electricity demand and in CO2 emissions.
