Windsor Runners Safe After Boston Marathon Bombing

Boston Police say hundreds were injured and three died Monday as two explosions occurred at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon.

Richard Frechette and Adam Bulewich, the two Windsor residents listed as entrants in Monday's Boston Marathon, are safe and sound.

Frechette finished the race just 20 minutes before two bombs exploded at the finish line — blasts that injured dozens and claimed three lives.

Although Frechette finished the race, he's currently stuck in Boston, according to his wife, Cathy.

Last night, Richard and his brother stayed at the Copley Square Hotel Sunday night, which is located roughly one block from the finish line.

"His car is there. His clothes are there. Everything is on lockdown in the area. He can't get to his car," said Cathy Frechette by phone Monday night.

According to Frechette, her husband heard the explosions and was able to get through to one of the couple's daughters at about 3:30 p.m. — 40 minutes after the bombs went off.

Since then, he has only been able to communicate through the occasional text message thanks to weak cellular signals in the area, said Frechette.

Richard Frechette has run the Boston Marathon four or five times, his wife said, and Monday was one of the few times someone in the family was not standing at the finish line cheering.

"Both I and my sister-in-law had something we couldn't get out of," she said.

Resident Adam Bulewich, while registered to compete in the race, didn't run Monday thanks to a hamstring injury, he said from his home Monday evening.

Still, the veteran marathoner and Boston Marathon alumnus described Monday's events as "heartbreaking."

"My heart goes out to the people, any one who is there," Bulewich said. "I've seen the videos. It's heartbreaking to see the destruction. Why would someone do this? It's awful."

As someone who has finished the Boston Marathon, Bulewich described crossing the finish line as "euphoric."

"You're so excited, but exhausted. It's mile 26," he said. "To have something else to deal with... I can't imagine how folks are managing to make it through this.

Frechette and Bulewich are two of the 419 Connecticut residents listed as entrants in the 2013 marathon.
