Forecast: Clear Skies for Lyrid Meteor Shower Peak Sunday, April 21

The Lyrid meteor shower will peak in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 21 and Monday, April 22, 2013.

We are in the midst of the first meteor shower since the beginning of 2013. The Lyrid meteor shower began on April 16 and will run through April 26, according to AccuWeather.com.

Better yet, Windsor should see favorable viewing conditions during the shower's peak, which is scheduled to occur in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, April 21.

According to ClearDarkSky.com, the sky in Windsor will be the darkest between about 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Sunday, and there will be little to no cloud cover.

AccuWeather.com says viewers in some parts of the country may see 10 to 20 meteors or more per hour.

"Lyrid meteors are typically as bright as the stars in the Big Dipper, which is to say, middling brightness, but some are more intense. Even brighter than Venus," said Mark Paquette of AccuWeather, detailing the Lyrids, which are named for their location within the constellation Lyra.
