SEMI Electronic Music Performance

The Studio of Electronic Music, Inc. (SEMI) kicks off its 2011 season with a live performance of two rarely performed electronic masterworks at a special concert on Thursday, January 27, at 7:30pm at the Performance Hall of the Hubbard Music Center at the Loomis Chaffee School.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Mikrophonie I” for tam-tam, microphones and electronics, and Grammy-nominated composer MC Maguire’s world premiere performance of “Narcissus auf Bali” for marimba, vibraphone and electronics are features of the program.  Both works in this landmark event showcase the talents of percussionists Sayun Chang, Murray Mast, Bill Solomon and Ben Toth, all graduates and faculty at the Hartt School. Bill Solomon is an adjunct music teacher at Loomis Chaffee, where he teaches private percussion lessons, coaches the percussion ensemble and chamber music class, and is on staff as a piano accompanist for the music department. Mr. Maguire (from Toronto) and audio engineers Benjamin Klein and Matt Sargent will be joining the group.

Stockhausen composed his work in Germany in 1964 during a period of experimentation with electronics, musical form and a search for new sounds.  “Mikrophonie I” exploits the musical potential of a single large gong, while microphones themselves are treated as instruments, amplifying the quiet sounds that normally go unheard in a live performance.
Maguire’s 2008 work “Narcissus auf Bali” is a dense aural collage that juxtaposes the Greek myth “Narcissus and Echo” with the sounds of gamelan, music from the jungles of Bali. Created using a 400-track mixer and hundreds of samples, this forty-minute double concerto will test the stamina of both the performers, as they navigate complex textures, and virtuosic passages.
