Hill-Stead Museum and Saint Joseph College Present Taylor Mali and Lisa Starr: A Page-Meets-Stage-Style Poetry Performance- rescheduled!

Taylor Mali and Lisa Starr are two performers you won't want to miss -- and seeing them on December 2 at Saint Joseph's College will help benefit Hill-Stead's Sunken Garden Poetry Festival! Mali is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement. Starr was recently named Poet Laureate of Rhode Island. Come enjoy this Page-Meets-Stage-style by these two dynamic performers while helping keep the Festival alive!

Taylor Mali is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement.  A former teacher and advocate of the teaching profession, Taylor’s  New Teacher Project has a goal of creating 1,000 new teachers through "poetry, persuasion, and perseverance." He is the author of two books of poetry, The Last Time As We Are (Write Bloody Books 2009) and What Learning Leaves (Hanover 2002), and four CDs of spoken word. In 2005, he established the popular Page Meets Stage series in New York City, on which this benefit reading is fashioned.

Lisa Starr is a two-time recipient of the Rhode Island fellowship for poetry and was recently named Poet Laureate for the state of Rhode Island, in which capacity she hopes to develop “an outreach program with workshops in every school, library and senior center in the state.” Starr has published three full-length collections of poetry: Mad With Yellow, (2009), Days of Dogs and Driftwood(1993), and This Place Here (2001).  Starr is the founder and director of the Block Island Poetry Project, a nationally acclaimed writing series.
