Candle-Dipping and a Lesson at the Historical Society

To help keep youngsters busy and learning over their winter break, the Historical Society is holding a week-long candle-dipping and educational seminar.

While students get a break from their studies this week, staying physically and mentally active can be a challenge. The Windsor Historical Society is offering a program that will get students out of the house and engage them in a hands-on educational lesson this week.

Students and their parents will be able to stop by the Historical Society and make their own candles all week long. A variety of colors will be offered to make each candle a unique creation, but the Historical society is taking it a step further by exploring the importance of candles and their use throughout history.

Through the examination of the history of candles, students will learn about the lives of ancient Egyptians and Romans, the use of cow or sheep fat in the middle ages, whale oil in the 18th century, right up to the use of kerosene for lighting and the invention of the light bulb in the 19th century.

The educational experience will be taken a step further with the opportunity to try on colonial clothing, "try out a child-size rope bed, or 'milk' Flavia the cow," according the Society Director Christine Ermenc.

Through Fri., Feb. 25, the candle-dipping event will be held form 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The event costs $10 per family, of $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children. Society members will receive a discounted price of $2. For more information, call the Windsor Historical Society at 860-688-3813.
