Hartford County is under a wind chill advisory through Wednesday at 10 a.m. with temperatures expected to reach bitter cold proportions, according to the National Weather Service.

Parts of northern Connecticut will experience wind chill values as low as 15 below zero and winds blowing from the west at 10 to 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 35 mph, the NWS says.

The thermometer will read as low as 2 degrees Tuesday evening.

"Prolonged exposure to the bitter cold and wind could lead to frostbite and hypothermia," the NWS says. "In prolonged periods of cold temperatures, be sure to check the antifreeze in your automobile, use space heaters safely, and if emergency generators are necessary, be sure they are well-ventilated."
