The Whistle that Saved 30 Kids from Windsor's Tornado

Twenty-nine campers were playing under East Windsor's Sports World bubble Monday afternoon when a tornado ripped through town.

Sports World's Kathy Russotto quickly wrangled the kids together, out from under the dome and to safety a mere 15 seconds before the sports bubble was consumed by the cyclone.

It was her whistle -- a talent she says took her a full summer of her childhood to master --- that enabled her to get the young kids to safety in a timely manner.

(Watch Russotto demonstrate her whistle and tell of its importance in the video above.)

According to Russotto, a whistle -- or any attention-grabbing sound or action -- is paramount to obtaining the attention of a group of children.

In order to maximize effectiveness, an instructor, educator or counselor should let kids know to stop what they're doing and pay attention when the sound or action is made from day one.
