Stories Of Family Migration Series Begins Tonight At Historical Society

The series will present personal stories of the search for Irish, Swedish, German, English and African-American family history and migration.

Three practicing genealogists will lead a series at the Historical Society, beginning tonight with a look at Judith Ellen Johnson's stories of Irish and Swedish family migration.

Held on Tuesdays through July 19, the genealogist will tell their personal tale of searching to uncover their their family's past. In doing so, the professionals will give those in attendance some tools they may need to find their own family stories.

The schedule of the series is as follows:

  • Judith Ellen Johnson will share the tale of her Irish and Swedish ancestors who came to Connecticut in the 19th century. She will discuss her use of birth, death, marriage and other records in her search, as well as the road blocks she ran into. She will also share tips on dealing with foreign-language records. July 5.
  • Leslie Albrecht Huber is the award-winning family history author of The Journey Takers. She will tell the tale of her German, Swedish and English ancestors and share sources and her approach to methodology. July 12.
  • William Fothergill will use his own family history to tell the tale of Colonial African-Native Americans in Connecticut. A faculty member at Connecticut State University, Fothergill will tell of his family's independence and discuss the process of ancestral discovery. July 19.

Each session costs $10 or $25 for the entire series. Reservations in advance are required to attend. They can be made by calling 860-688-3813, ext. 102.
