Heat Relief Suggestions for Windsor's Excessive Heat

Due to continuing forecasts of high heat and humidity, FEMA has issued heat related safety tips.

With dangerously hot temperatures expected for the remainder of the week, and heat indices of 101 degrees or higher, the NWS has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for Windsor through Thursday evening.

For your convenience, Patch has compiled information provided by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and developed a quick safety tip sheet to help you maintain your health during extremely hot weather.

Do:

  • stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun;
  • stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available;
  • consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, and other community facilities;
  • eat well-balanced, light, and regular meals;
  • drink plenty of water;
  • limit intake of alcoholic beverages;
  • dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible;
  • protect your face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat; and
  • check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.

Avoid:

  • using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician;
  • leaving children or pets alone in closed vehicles; and
  • strenuous work during the warmest part of the day.
