Science Explorers

When/Where: Feb. 17 at 5 p.m.; Windsor Public Library

Why Go: A great opportunity for kids who love science to learn and gain hands-on experience. This session is open to children of all ages, will engage children with science-enthusiasts their own age, and has educational value. This is the second of four sessions.

Pricing: Free.

Family Drum Circle

Where/When: Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Wilson Branch Library.

Why Go: This interactive workshop will include drummers from “Garden of Beats” providing a brief introduction to hand drums, the creation of a couple of different rhythms on the djembe, and a final (big) number that features a huge collection of percussion instruments.  Everyone who comes will get to play!    Open to everyone, recommended for ages seven and up, or anyone who can follow a rhythm.  Please register in advance.  No experience necessary. Open Figure and Hockey Skate

Where/When: Loomis Chaffee's Savage Rink from 1:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Why Go: A great opportunity to get your little one some free skating time. And if you're a bit rusty on ice as well, you can strap on your own skates and glide along with your youngster. Hockey skating is allowed until 2:15, and pucks and sticks must be removed after 2:15 p.m. for open figure skating.

Price: Free.

Open Cockpit Sunday

Where/When: New England Air Museum, Windsor Locks, February 20.

Why Go: Visitors will be permitted to climb into the cockpits of up to 12 vintage aircraft, a full-motion flight simulator and two static flight simulators.
The aircraft to be open include the famous Vought Corsair of WWII, the North American  F-100 Super Sabre, a DC-3 airliner, several helicopters and more.  There will be additional hands on activities for the enjoyment of the younger visitors during the event.

Pricing: Adults (age 12 & up),$10; Children Ages 4 - 11, $6; Children Age 3 & under, free; and Seniors (age 65& up), $9.

A Kid's-Eye View of Harriet Beecher Stowe

Where/When: Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, Hartford.

Why Go: Children ages 5 -12 can learn about the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, during a special February Vacation program that includes an "I Spy" scavenger hunt with prizes awarded to winners. Young visitors can dress up in 19th century clothing as they tour the Victorian home where Stowe lived from 1873 until her death at age 85 in 1896.
Each child will be given a journal to take home and encouraged to begin an entry in the spirit of "journaling", which was popular during Stowe's time.

Pricing: $5 for children ages 5-12 and $4 for accompanying adults (required).
