Grab and Go Kids Planner: Pirate and Princess Party, Globetrotters, Nzinga's Daughters

We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and new places to try out with children. Each week, we'll give you the info on the five best family activities or events for the week.

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

1. Candle Dipping

When/Where: Windsor Historical Society; Feb. 21-25 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Why Go: Candle-dipping, a history lesson on the use of candles throughout history, an opportunity to try on colonial clothing, and you can take home your own hand-made candle.

Pricing: $10 per family or $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children and $2 for members.

2. Pirate and Princess Party

When/Where: Kennadi's Closet Children's Consignment Store; Wed. Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.

Why Go: What kid doesn't want to dress up like a pirate or princess and have a party?

Pricing: Free

3. Harlem Globetrotters

When/Where: XL Center (Hartford); Feb. 26

Why Go: The Globetrotters are an American sports staple. They have been entertaining families for generations and put on a truly memorable show.

4. Nzinga's Daughters

When/Where: Mary Cheney Library (Manchester); Feb. 26

Why Go: Nzinga's Daughters is a self-described group of "women of song, story and prose." Drumming, singing and culture make this a one-of-a-kind event.

5. Open Figure and Hockey Skating

When/Where: Loomis Chaffee Savage Rink; Feb. 27 from 1:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Why Go:  A great opportunity to get your little one some free skating time. And if you're a bit rusty on ice as well, you can strap on your own skates and glide along with your youngster. Hockey skating is allowed until 2:15, and pucks and sticks must be removed after 2:15 p.m. for open figure skating.

Pricing: Free, but bring your own skates.
