MDC ANNOUNCES EXPECTED START DATE FOR WINDSOR WATER MAIN PERMANENT REPLACEMENT;

Cites Response to First Church of Windsor as Example of Effective Emergency Management and Community Outreach

(WINDSOR, CT) The Metropolitan District (the MDC) is pleased to announced that they expect to begin a permanent pipe replacement for the Farmington River water main in Windsor  in January 2014, with construction expected to be complete  in May 2014.  The District has been coordinating with local and state agencies to manage the repair and maintaining a temporary pipe without interrupting water service for the area.

“The MDC thanks Town of Windsor government officials and ratepayers for their cooperation and assistance.  We have been working diligently on this since mid-July and look forward to successful completion of the project,” said Scott Jellison.  The water main, which runs under Palisado Avenue and is completely submerged in the Farmington River, broke suddenly in the middle of the night, Sunday, July 15th.  The MDC rapidly responded by searching out the underwater break with a dive team and all other available resources.

The First Church of Windsor was one of thousands of Windsor ratepayers that could have been dramatically affected by a water main break under water in the Farmington River near Palisado Avenue.  The sprinkler system for the church was impacted by the water main break and because the church’s meeting house was built in 1790, church leaders were very concerned about the potential impact. However, within hours of the break, the MDC was in contact with Mary Phelan, the church’s administrator.

“Three representatives came to meet with our Senior Pastors and me to assess the damage… they (the MDC) contacted our sprinkler contractor, and made sure that they took care of the bill.  The MDC advised us they were doing everything they could to make the building safe by the time our Sunday worship service started, “said Phelan.

Within hours of the break, the MDC was able to restore water service to all of the area’s ratepayers by diverting the water flow through otherareas of the MDC’s water distribution network. The MDC worked tirelessly to immediately address the situation and ensure uninterrupted water service for the community to allow for normal day to day activities to continue.

“Work out on the street was stopped about an hour before our service began so Sunday service took place as planned with the sprinkler system back in good working order in a quiet neighborhood…The staff at First Church feels strongly that given what happened, the MDC could not have responded or followed up more professionally than they did. For that, we are extremely appreciative,” said Phelan.
